Editor-At-Large
Established in 1973, the Washington Square News is the paper of record for NYU students. From 2009-2013, the newspaper had a daily print paper on Mondays-Thursdays and an online edition on Fridays, covering national and local breaking news, features, arts, dining, fashion and sports.
Project
Over my four years as the Washington Square News, I served as the Creative Director of our daily issues and later, Editor-At-Large to advise the rising teams.
INFOGRAPHICS Using bright colors and bold typography, I created eye-catching graphics that distilled complicated ideas. The design broke up the monotony of a traditionally text-heavy newspaper design.
BOLDER DESIGNS
In 2010, our paper was redesigned with new fonts and an updated contemporary-classic sensibility. When I took the reins as Creative Director in 2011, I led my team to be more experimental with layouts — adding standalone photo stories, incorporating negative space and different shapes to increase visual interest. I commissioned artists around campus and incorporated their illustrations into the pages. Lastly, I led a redesign of our “Page 2” which covered lighter fares — staff recommendations, top college headlines and daily snapshots.

WEBSITE & MOBILE
In spring 2011, I segued to run Special Issues but remained Editor-At-Large for the daily paper. In this role, I advised three managing teams. The biggest project involved redesigning our website to match our print edition and creating a mobile-friendly version. We were dedicated to growing our online traffic and started a new “Under the Arch” blog that is still in use today. Additionally, we included scans of our daily front pages and links to web-exclusive stories. With the website relaunch, we averaged around 87k site visits per month.
