Futuro Media Group is a Pulitzer Prize-winning nonprofit newsroom producing bilingual journalism for and about the growing Latino diaspora. In 2024, Futuro content reached more than 10 million people and the newsroom wanted to launch a subscription service to generate revenue to sustain its future reporting.
Project
As the Production Manager, I built a strategy and led our team to brought Futuro+ to market within three months. Working within the constraints of a modest nonprofit budget, I built a strategy that minimized costs while maximizing cross-platform content output, and drove company-wide alignment to achieve our launch.
Concurrently, I jumped in as a creative director / producer / editor to shape our creative output from end to end — directing an integrated video + audio + social campaign, developing the editorial content roadmap, identifying and guiding our Director of Photography, designer and animators to create our visual identity, selecting the hosting platform, building the website and mobile presence, and organized members-only virtual events to deepen audience engagement and retention.
Evolution of a Campaign
When founder Maria Hinojosa started Futuro Media in 2010, the company has always followed a core ethos: telling diverse, community-centered stories. To visualize the organization’s growth — and the expansion of its slate — we built a campaign featuring hosts of upcoming projects, staged against a lush plant set.
We collaborated with a Director of Photography to film in Open Gate which allowed our footage to be repurposed across formats — video trailers, podcast episodes, vertical social content, promotional key art, and audio-only ads. We also partnered with an illustrator and an animator to design custom animated backplate, symbolizing Futuro’s evolution into a more expansive, bountiful future.
Social Media
Campaign assets were designed for vertical and horizontal experience, allowing stories, visuals and audio to be shared across platforms and drive subscription awareness.
Virtual Events
A core premium offering of Futuro+ was subscriber-only virtual events and moderated panels, giving members direct access to reporters and featured guests — and insight into how the journalism they love is made.
Select moments from these events were clipped for social media to attract new subscribers and repurposed as bonus podcast episodes, extending the life and reach of the content.
